Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce pain, relieve muscle tension, and improve jaw function. Many patients report reduced discomfort, fewer headaches, and improved mobility over time.
Acupuncture is not intended to replace dental, orthodontic, or medical care when needed. Instead, it can serve as part of a comprehensive approach to symptom management.
Every treatment begins with a conversation.
We'll discuss your symptoms, jaw function, headache patterns, stress levels, sleep quality, and any contributing habits such as clenching or grinding.
Treatment takes place on a comfortable heated table with pillows, bolsters, and blankets available for support. Areas of tension in the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders may be gently assessed before treatment. Acupuncture points are selected based on your individual presentation, and you'll then rest quietly for about 20–30 minutes.
Many patients report feeling less tension in the jaw and face, fewer headaches, and greater overall relaxation following treatment.
TMJ dysfunction often involves more than the jaw itself.
Dr. Carolyn takes a whole-person approach, considering factors such as stress, sleep, posture, muscle tension, nervous system regulation, and overall health when creating your treatment plan.
Acupuncture points are selected based on your individual presentation, and treatment may be enhanced with therapies such as craniosacral therapy, massage therapy, cupping, aromatherapy, or lifestyle recommendations when appropriate.
Care is always collaborative, and treatments are adjusted based on your goals, preferences, and response to care. The focus is not simply on reducing jaw pain, but on supporting long-term comfort and function.
Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce pain and improve function for individuals experiencing TMJ-related symptoms.
Many patients seek acupuncture to help address tension, stress, and muscle tightness that may contribute to clenching and grinding. Being fitted for a mouth guard is highly recommended.
For many people, 4–6 weekly treatments provides a good starting point. Treatment recommendations are individualized based on your symptoms and goals.
