How Acupuncture May Help

Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce pain, improve function, support circulation, and encourage the body's natural healing processes. Many patients report improved mobility, reduced stiffness, and greater comfort with movement.

Acupuncture is not intended to replace medical or orthopedic care when needed. Instead, it can serve as part of a comprehensive approach to pain management and recovery.

What to Expect from Treatment

Every treatment begins with a conversation.

We'll discuss your symptoms, activity level, injury history, pain patterns, and any factors that may be contributing to discomfort. The goal is to understand both the condition of the knee and how it is affecting your daily life.

Treatment takes place on a comfortable heated table with pillows, bolsters, and blankets available for support. Areas of tension, swelling, or discomfort may be gently assessed before treatment. Acupuncture points are selected based on your individual presentation, and you'll then rest quietly for about 20–30 minutes.

Many patients report decreased pain, improved mobility, and greater confidence with movement as treatment progresses.

A Personalized Approach to Healing

Knee pain can be influenced by injury history, movement patterns, inflammation, posture, activity level, and overall health.

Dr. Carolyn takes a whole-person approach, looking beyond symptoms to understand what may be contributing to your pain experience.

Acupuncture points are selected based on your individual presentation, and treatment may be enhanced with therapies such as cupping, gua sha, massage therapy, craniosacral therapy, aromatherapy, or lifestyle recommendations when appropriate.

Care is always collaborative, and treatments are adjusted based on your goals, preferences, and response to care. The focus is not simply on reducing pain, but on helping you move more comfortably and stay active.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help with knee pain?

Research suggests acupuncture may help reduce pain and improve function for many common knee conditions.

How many treatments will I need?

For many people, 4–6 weekly treatments provides a good starting point. More chronic conditions may benefit from ongoing care.

Can acupuncture help if I've already had surgery or physical therapy?

Many patients seek acupuncture alongside other therapies to support healing, mobility, and pain management. If you've had surgery on your knee or a knee replacement, I would need at doctor's clearance to needle directly on the knee. Usually, 6 weeks post-op is the general rule.
