When the Body Can’t Cool Down

A Pattern I’ve Been Seeing in the Clinic

Lately in the clinic, I’ve been noticing a pattern.

Many people are coming in with some combination of pain, tension, poor sleep, headaches, irritability, and a sense that their body just won’t fully settle. For some, it’s low back and hip pain that makes it hard to get comfortable at night. For others, it’s neck and shoulder tension that creeps upward into headaches. And for many, sleep feels lighter, more interrupted, or less restorative than usual.

If this has been your experience, you’re not alone.

The Accumulated Heat of August

August can be a time when the body feels like it has been carrying heat for a while. Not just the heat of the weather, but the accumulated heat of busy schedules, poor sleep, stress, inflammation, hormonal shifts, pain, and overstimulation. By this point in the season, the body may feel less resilient than it did earlier in the summer.

In Chinese medicine, summer is the fullest expression of yang energy. Yang is warm, bright, active, outward, and expansive. It is the energy of long days, movement, connection, growth, and fullness.

There is nothing wrong with yang. We need it. Yang helps us engage with life. It supports movement, creativity, warmth, connection, and activity.

But by August, many of us have been living in that outward, active energy for a while. Add in heat, disrupted routines, pain, stress, inflammation, or hormonal shifts, and the body may begin to feel like it cannot fully come back down.

When the Body Feels Tired but Wired

This might show up as feeling tired but wired. You may be exhausted, but still unable to fully rest. Sleep may feel lighter. Pain may feel louder. The nervous system may feel like it is still “on,” even when you are trying to slow down.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, this can be a sign that the body is asking for more cooling, settling, and regulation. Not more pushing. Not more forcing. More support in returning from outward yang energy into something quieter and more restorative.

Heat, Shen, and Sleep

Chinese medicine teaches that heat can disturb the Shen, often translated as the spirit. I also think of the Shen as the part of us connected to emotional steadiness, sleep, presence, and the nervous system’s ability to feel calm and safe.

When the Shen is settled, the mind can quiet. The body can rest. Sleep can come more naturally.

When the Shen is disturbed, things may feel more agitated. The mind may race. Sleep may become restless. Emotions may sit closer to the surface. You may feel overstimulated, unsettled, or unable to fully exhale.

Pain Can Keep the System on Alert

Pain can create a similar disruption.

Pain is not just a physical sensation. It is also a message that keeps the nervous system alert. Even when we are tired, the body may have a hard time powering down if it is still receiving signals of discomfort, tension, or threat.

This is why low back and hip pain can interfere with sleep so deeply. It can be hard to find a position that feels comfortable. The body may wake each time it turns. Rest becomes fragmented.

It is also why neck and shoulder tension can contribute to headaches, jaw tightness, and a sense of pressure or heaviness in the head. When the upper body is holding tension, the whole system can feel more activated.

The Pattern Beneath the Symptoms

In Chinese medicine, pain, tension, heat, and sleep are not separate experiences. They are part of a larger pattern. Symptoms often begin to make more sense when we look at how they are connected.

Heat can make the body feel restless.
Pain can keep the nervous system on alert.
Poor sleep can lower the body’s capacity to recover.
And when recovery is limited, pain and tension often feel louder.

This cycle can be frustrating, especially when you are doing your best and still feel like your body is not cooperating. But these symptoms are not random. They may be signs that the body is asking for support, regulation, and restoration.

What Your Body May Be Asking For

Your body may not be asking you to push harder.

It may be asking for help softening the places that are holding tension.
It may be asking for support in calming the internal heat and agitation.
It may be asking for a way to feel safe enough to rest.

Acupuncture can be helpful because it works with both the physical body and the nervous system. Treatment may focus on easing muscle tension, calming inflammation, improving circulation, reducing pain, supporting sleep, and helping the body shift out of a heightened stress response.

Sometimes the goal is not to force the body to relax, but to create the conditions where it finally feels safe enough to soften.

You’re Not Imagining It

If your sleep has been off, your pain has been louder, or your body feels like it cannot quite cool down, there may be a reason. You are not imagining it, and you are not alone in it.

And sometimes, healing begins with helping the body remember how to settle.

If this feels familiar, you’re welcome to text or email me and let me know what you’ve been experiencing. I’m not always able to answer the phone when I’m with patients, but I do read messages between appointments. Sometimes naming the pattern is the first step toward helping the body settle — and from there, we can decide what kind of support your body may be asking for.
